Hryniuk breaks through for maiden win.
30 March, 2003 - CRG driver, Jason Hryniuk broke through for his maiden Formula A victory in the opening round of the 2003 Dunlop Australian CIK Championship at Todd Road today.
After taking victory in the Pre-Final Hryniuk started on pole for the 30-lap Final with Andrew Tomlinson on his outside.
The 22-year-old led the way through the opening turn as Matthew Wall attempted an outside pass and "got hung out to dry" dropping back to fifth on the exit.
West Australian Birel kart driver, Michael Patrizi was the hard charger in the opening few laps along with Wall who was regaining the positions he lost in the opening turn.
Shortly after it became a 10-kart freight train at the front to be headed by Wall, Patrizi, Tomlinson and Hryniuk all having a period in the lead.
At half race distance Wall had managed top open a gap over the field as Richard McLeod, Tomlinson, Patrizi and Hryniuk battled for the minor spots.
McLeod used his vast experience and determination to close the gap as Wall battled with understeer costing him valuable lap time.
As McLeod made a move for the lead just under half race distance only to have Hryniuk take over the front running several laps later.
From this point on Hryniuk opened a small gap to hold on for his maiden Formula A victory ahead of a hard charging Patrizi who snared second from McLeod on the last lap.
"That race was one of the best I have ever been in and not only because I won. It was a real good race," said an excited Hryniuk.
In the Intercontinental A Final Nick Lowe lead the early running ahead of Glenn Powles while Alex Schultz and Tim Ball come together leaving Leah Unsworth no where to go. Schultz and Ball failed to finish while Unsworth resumed at the back of the pack.
Powles took over the front running at mid race distance only to have Lowe regain the lead several laps later. When Powles regained the lead within a handful of laps remaining Lowe ran wide allowing Kyle Clews, Shane Price and Eddie Wignall past.
Powles held on for a narrow win ahead of Clews and Price who charged from the back of the pack.
Matthew Sofi took out the Intercontinental C class ahead of Tyson Pearce who was exceptionally fast in the closing laps. Justin Ruggier finished third in his Intercontinental C debut.
In the Junior Intercontinental A class Paul Laskazeski put yesterday's drama's behind him to take out the opening round for JT Team Arrow. After leading for the opening half of the race Kristian Lindbom dropped a chain handing second place to Ben McCashney.
Top kart driver Roddy Bellbowen drove a great race to charge through the pack to round out the podium.
The next round of the 2003 Dunlop Australian CIK Championship will be held at South Australia's Bolivar raceway on May 3/4.
