21 June, 2003 - Queensland driver Barclay Holden transformed his practice pace into a sensational pole qualifying time and a heat victory at the opening day of competition in Round three of the Dunlop Australian CIK Championship today at Toowoomba, Queensland.
Driving his Remo Racing Trulli kart the 22-year-old Gold Coast driver set a blistering 39.260 second circulation around the Greer Park Raceway. Closely following Holden was the Rainer and Leech CRG pilot of Jason Hryniuk, Daniel Elliott, Richard McLeod and Matthew Wall.
Holden and Hryniuk went on to share the heat victories throughout the day with McLeod and Wall finishing third in the first and second heats respectively.
McLeod was hampered by a carburettor problem ending his second event early while Wall endured a broken water pump in the opening event forcing him out of the event with a handful of laps remaining.
A Titanic battle was the order of the day in Intercontinental A with fastest qualifier Trulli kart driver Glenn Powles, Top Kart driver Nathan Antunes, Matthew Muller and Kiwi Mitch Cunningham exchanging the top spots throughout the opening event.
Muller held on for the heat one victory ahead of Powles and CRG's Cunningham.
Powles led from start to finish in the second event while Cunningham was the best of the rest to claim second.
Equal Championship leader Tyson Pearce set the fastest qualifying time in his Australian made Omega ahead of William Yarwood and Ashley Slavkovic.
Slavkovic got a blinder of a start to lead the way during the opening event. Justin Ruggier finished second ahead of Joshua Pontello, Andrew Thompson who was impressing on debut and Blake Varney.
Pearce made up for a disappointing opening event to claim a convincing victory in the second. JT Team Arrow pilot, Yarwood finished second ahead of Slavkovic.
After putting in a sensational effort in qualifying to claim pole Top Kart's James Baudzus was placed at the rear of the grid due to a starting infringement in the opening event.
His Top Kart team mate, Kristian Lindbom flew the flag for the team claiming both victories. Tony Kart driver, Ashley Walsh finished second in the opener while Martin Swindells continued his great pace of the weekend to fill the runner-up spot in the second.
Blake Simpson is having a great run so far this weekend claiming third spot in both heat races.
The racing continues tomorrow from 9:30am with a further round of heats, Pre-Final and the Finals due to start at 12:40pm
The Toowoomba circuit is located at Greer Park Raceway, Snellings Road, Helidon, Queensland approximately 15 kilometres East of Toowoomba.
