WALKER RACING AND TEAM AUSTRALIA TO REWARD CHAMP CAR ROTAX KART CHALLENGE DRIVER WITH ENTRY-LEVEL TEST SESSION
INDIANAPOLIS (September 13, 2006) -- Having seen more than his share of drivers in his many years as a Champ Car team owner, Derrick Walker knows the value of a karting career to those that aspire to the top levels of open-wheel racing.
This season, Walker Racing and Team Australia will help a deserving driver take one more step toward the dream of racing in the Champ Car World Series, as the team will award one deserving Champ Car ROTAX Kart Challenge driver with a test in the team's Formula BMW car. The award winner will be determined by a panel of judges following the U.S Grand Nationals and will come from the 16-18 age bracket.
As the Official Karting Series of Champ Car, the Champ Car ROTAX Kart Challenge serves as the first step for young drivers to begin their climb toward an open-wheel racing career, with thousands of youngsters battling each race in hopes of becoming the next Paul Tracy or Sebastien Bourdais. The series will conduct its national championships in conjunction with the Champ Car event at Road America September 22-24, crowning its 2006 champions on that same weekend.
"Given our involvement in all three efforts, Champ Car, Atlantic, and Formula BMW USA, I think it's fantastic to see that Champ Car is making an effort to connect with the karting fraternity in a really positive way," Walker said. "These young kids are our stars of the future and all too often the road to the top of open wheel is a complicated and difficult one. I compliment Joe Ramos Jr. and the ROTAX Max Challenge program along with Champ Car for bridging the gap in making the connection and secondly for providing an opportunity for these deserving drivers."
The Champ Car ROTAX Kart Challenge program consists of more than 200 events held through approximately 30 regional challenge series in the United States. Those regional series culminated in regional finals earlier this summer, leading to the September 22-23 U.S. Grand Nationals.
"We owe a lot to Derrick Walker and Champ Car for making this possible," stated Joe Ramos Jr, Program Director for the Champ Car ROTAX Kart Challenge. "The opportunity Walker Racing and Team Australia have created through this test session embodies the true intentions behind the partnership between Champ Car and the ROTAX Kart Challenge. The chance to step out of a ROTAX kart and into an open-wheel car solidifies the ROTAX series as a true step in Champ Car's developmental ladder. I hope this is just the beginning of what our series can do for aspiring drivers looking for a Champ Car career."
Details regarding the date and location of the test will be released in the coming weeks.
