Pointe du Lac, Québec, May 17, 2004 - For this year's first race in the Coupe du Québec championship, 14-year-old kart driver Toby Rinaldoni had a perfect week-end on the track he considers home, since it belongs to PSL Karting, his kart preparer. Saturday, after dominating the qualifying round, he started from pole position for the pre-final and the final to round the hat trick. Tony's team was very happy with this first race.
"I'm very happy to start the season this way," said the youngster from Sainte-Catherine. "The fact that I raced in the Stars of Tomorrow Series, last weekend, got me focused and I'm on a winning streak after having done so well back there. And I put in so many laps on the Pointe du Lac track that I feel even more confident. I feel even more pressure this year in ICA Senior, because I don't want to waste a race. So I have to keep focused all the time."
Time to run some tests
During his only appearance on the track, Rinaldoni set the pace with more 0,8 second on the nearest competitor. His team had set his CRG kart differently. "Since we were racing at home, we made changes to my machine. This way we can compare results between the American and Québec series. Lucky us, everything we tried this weekend worked and I won both the pre-final and the final today (Sunday)."
"Last year, when I took the lead in a race, I used to be very nervous and I could make mistakes while watching my opponents. Now I push myself to run perfect laps after perfect laps and I say to myself 'They have to catch up with me'. That's a challenge I like."
Next round in Thetford Mines
The Rinaldoni team will be back next weekend for the second Coupe du Québec round in Thetford Mines. Toby is the defending champion in the ICA Junior category but he now runs in the Senior class this year.
