Two podiums highlight wet weekend at Shannonville
SHANNONVILLE, ONTARIO -- Robert Wickens was determined to have a strong weekend at the annual OKRA (Ontario Kart Racing Association) GrandNationals at Shannonville Motorsports Park on the final weekend in July. Wickens had strong performances in Rotax Heavy and Formula Senior (ICC) to end the weekend with two second place podium finishes. To go along with those two podiums, Wickens also had the pole in Rotax Heavy.
"For sure our Team Hurricane chassis and motors were fantastic this weekend," Wickens said. "I was really happy with the performance, and I think this weekend we showed our true speed."
Wickens, in both races had checked out on the third place runner. "The chassis was really, really good at the beginning," Wickens said. "That let me build a comfortable gap, so I could work on getting a decent shot at the win."
In the Rotax Heavy race, Wickens had the pole and led early on before a loose radiator distracted him, causing him to lose the lead. "I was really worried that they would black flag me," Wickens said of the condition of his Hurricane chassis. "But it wasn't going to come off, it was just loose. Once I knew that, I started pushing hard to close the gap, but I ran out of time."
In the ICC race, Wickens qualified a strong third and at the start, he vaulted into second. "I made a good start," Wickens said. "Our CRS had a really short first gear, and that helped me get a great launch off the line." Wickens hounded the leader for the entire distance, but ultimately had to settle for second. "I am really happy with the podium finishes," Wickens said. "We need to build some momentum, and this really helps."
