It¹s almost difficult to believe but only three short years ago, Sydney's Andrew Tomlinson had absolutely no interest in motorsport not bad for an aspiring Formula One World Champion who is now one of Australia¹s top karters.
Whilst quiet and reserved by nature, this talented young man has a burning ambition to be Australia¹s next Formula One World Champion, and by his efforts so far, he has every opportunity to fulfil this desire.
Under the guidance of one of Australia¹s leading international drivers Andrew progressed through the lower ranks quickly to join the elite World Championship winning Tony Kart team in the international classes in Australia for 1999. His first event netted a victory and the lap record against some of Australia¹s toughest competition, and all after only 12 months in the sport.
Joining Tony Kart doesn¹t just mean you have the best equipment available at your fingertips, it also makes you part of a big international family. This family will graciously accept Andrew into it to contest selected rounds of the 2000 European Championships in the class which saw Australia¹s own James Courtney win the 1997 World Championship for of all teams, Tony Kart.
Brief test sessions in Europe during 1999 saw Andrew develop a level of rapport with the World Championship team, a rapport which earned him the right to join the team for the recent World Cup in Japan. Against two men who beat him in the Australian Championship this season and a field of over 50 Japanese drivers, Andrew quickly stamped his authority by leading the timesheets in his very first session on the circuit. He got caught out in qualifying though, finishing just outside the top ten in changeable conditions before taking fourth in heat one, and fourteenth in heat two for a twelfth place start in the pre-final. A conservative approach was called for to conserve tyres for the all important final and Andrew excelled maintaining a strong pace and finishing with tyres in a much better state than many of the drivers starting ahead of him in the final.
In typical motorsport fashion, even the best laid plans can go astray, Andrew suffering a hit from behind from an over exuberant local in the second corner of the final after making three positions in the first turn.
Despite the disappointing conclusion, Andrew was decidedly upbeat and philosophical about the result in what was his first international meeting.
Now it¹s on to 2000. Locally, Andrew will contest a class which consists of Australia¹s greatest karting talent. Internationally he will compete against the worlds best, including some of those drivers he has raced in Australia.
It won¹t be an easy year, but motivation and desire are what this young Sydney driver is all about. Keep an eye out for him, Tomlinson is sure to be a name to remember.
