Scott Sharp gets valuable seat time in True Value IROC cars at Chicagoland.
JOLIET, Ill. (July 8, 2002) - The True Value IROC cars took to the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway Monday in preparation for Race 3, which takes place this Saturday, July 13. This will be the first race in the Chicago area for the all-star series, which matches 12 drivers from a number of different series in equally prepared cars.
Test drivers Dave Marcis, Jim Sauter and Dick Trickle shook down all the racecars and began the equalization process, which consists of back-to-back speed runs. In-between racecar runs, the veteran trio put Indy Racing League competitor Scott Sharp through the paces of simulated race runs.
Of his first day in a stock car on the D-shaped tri-oval, Sharp said, "As always, working with Dave, Jim, and Dick is great, they're like lifesavers and they helped me make huge gains. There's such a world of difference between the open-wheel cars and the IROC cars, especially coming to a shorter track. You really feel so much more movement in these cars than in the Indy cars. In my first run I felt like a fish out of water, but I made huge gains in the second run, huge gains in the third run and really felt comfortable by the end of the day. I really appreciate the fact that the open-wheel guys can come out and get as much practice in the True Value IROC cars as we need, it really helps us out a lot."
"He did a great job out here today," said Marcis of Sharp's practice runs. "He's a hard worker, a good listener and fast learner, and hopefully, it will prepare him for a chance at a good result in the race, he deserves it."
True Value IROC practice will resume Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. CDT. Drivers expected are Helio Castroneves (IRL), Al Unser Jr. (IRL), Buddy Lazier (IRL) and Danny Lasoski (World of Outlaws.)
