TRUE VALUE FIREBIRD IROC XXI PRE-RACE QUOTES
RANDY LAJOIE (NASCAR Busch Series) -- "It's not only a great thrill, it's a great honor to represent not only the Busch Series but short track America. I'm just going to try to do the best job I can and try to win one of these four races for the short trackers of the United States. I've been here plenty of times when I was a kid in the grandstands, watching IROC races. They're fabulous races. IROC, Jay Signore, True Value, Goodyear ... they put on a heckuva series. I can't wait to be part of this series and be part of the elite group that's invited. An IROC car is about the same as a Busch Series car or a Cup car. It's a whole lot more comfortable here than a Busch car or a Cup car. They put a lot more ground effects in these things; they get them a lot more stable for competition, for closeness. We're on the ragged edge half the time with our (NASCAR Busch Series) cars. These things are real stable, real fun to drive. I'm really looking forward to it. Myself and Jimmy Sauter went out there with Jimmy Vasser today -- the first time he's been out there in an IROC or a closed-wheel car, really, and drafted around him a lot to get him some laps. Now, maybe he'll help me out a little bit on Friday. Oh, I can't wait. These Indy car guys are the best in the country that's going to be here. I'm proud to be invited. (What do you think your chances are?) As good as anybody else's!"
JIMMY VASSER (CART PPG World Series champion) -- "I think it's a tremendous honor to be invited to participate in IROC. Aside from the fact that half of my heroes are out there -- it's a great opportunity to learn something new, and to get a taste for a different forum in motorsports. We're just going to go out there and do our best, and see what happens. Today was the first time I ever drove a stock car. I was real lucky to have Jim Sauter giving me some tips to help me out. He was real helpful. I watch NASCAR when I can and I know who all the guys are, but we're real busy with the Indy car stuff, too. We were out there today with the red number 12, which is my Indy car color and number. Maybe it's an omen. But I guess you've to pick a ball from a box to see what color you run. I got to draft a little bit today, and it was fun. But I've got a little bit to learn -- actually, a lot more to learn, no doubt about it, but I'll come back and run some more on Wednesday and Thursday, and keep taking it in."
