JOLIET, IL -- July 13, 2002 -- Kelley Racing teammates Al Unser Jr. and Scott Sharp scored impressive second and fifth place finishes respectively in IROC 2002 round three at Chicagoland Speedway. Indy Racing League drivers dominated the event with five drivers finishing in the top six places. Buddy Lazier took the win, followed by Unser, Jr., Helio Castroneves, NASCAR'S Kevin Harvick, Sharp and Sam Hornish, Jr.
"It was great fun," said Unser Jr. "Helio, Harvick and I had a little train together but Buddy was so far out in front, by the time I got around Helio, I had nothing for Buddy. I couldn't pull up too close in the draft or the front end of my car got loose. I am happy he got the win.
"I want to thank Jay and Barbara Signore, True Value and everyone involved in the IROC series. It is a fun event to come run."
The most exciting moment of the race was on lap 61 when Unser, Castroneves and Harvick came up to lap a slow car between turns three and four. Castroneves got pinned on the outside, Unser dove low and Harvick tried to follow. Coming across the stripe, they were three wide and the crowd was on its feet. Unser got through on the low side taking over second spot with Castroneves following him down in to turn one with Harvick right behind. Sharp at the perfect view of the action and stayed settled in fifth after the others sorted things out.
"I had a lot of fun today," said Sharp. "I couldn't quite get hooked up in the draft but the car was strong enough to run in solidly in fifth. These cars are just so different from the IRL cars and respond in a completely different manner. I have learned a lot and am looking forward to the final race during Brickyard week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway."
The points chase tightened up significantly with Unser Jr. moving into second spot behind leader Harvick with 39 to the top spot of 44 points. Sharp sits in seventh with 29 points.
The final IROC event for the Kelley Racing teammates is Saturday, August 3.
