TRUE VALUE FIREBIRD IROC XX PRE-RACE NOTES
JOHNNY BENSON (NASCAR Busch Series) -- I think the IROC race is going to be pretty good. The cars are real stable right now -- they're great. I've only ran a few laps, and with two guys, not 12. It's going to be real interesting when the time comes, and it should be a lot of fun. I think running IROC will help (get him ready for the Daytona 500), but drafting with those cars is obviously different. The effects aren't the same. But any little bit of drafting will definitely help. We just hope we can learn something. It's going to be exciting.
STEVE KINSER (Short Track Racing) -- The new Firebirds feel real comfortable. They bounce around a little bit, but they don't feel you can help a guy quite as much in the draft right now. They're (crew) still playing with the cars. It definitely feels like it's going to be the same old thing -- everybody's going to be real close in the speedway races. We've had some good runs in IROC (Kinser won the Talladega Superspeedway round as a rookie in IROC XVIII in 1994 and finished second at Talladega in IROC XIX). I enjoy it. It's real fun to do. It sort of breaks up the monotony of the dirt stuff -- something different from what you race every week.
JEFF GORDON (NASCAR Winston Cup Series) -- The Pontiacs are different (from the IROC Dodges). They're still fun to drive. Driver skills are going to play a role in it and that's what's neat about it. They're definitely a little bit harder to pass with, and that's what we're trying to work with right now. The way they are right now, it's so hard to pass, I'd want to be up front at the start. That would be the best place to be. If we can get them to where they suck up and punch a bigger hole like they did in the past, it won't matter where you start. And I think they're going to accomplish it before we start.
ROBBY GORDON (PPG IndyCar World Series) -- I'm excited to be invited to race in IROC. I think it's going to be a lot of fun. It seems like the cars are pretty close already. I just came down a few days early -- I wanted to get in as many miles as I can so I can do a good job and put on a good show. There is a bit of a transition (from Indy Cars). We do draft in Indy Cars, too, but nothing to the point of NASCAR. I'm fortunate enough that I do have a little bit of experience at it and I know how to play the game. Hopefully, it will be my right day next Friday. You have to be at the right place at the right time, because if you're second and you go for the lead, if the guy behind you doesn't go with you, you could wind up tenth. If you're second and the guy goes with you, you could win. It's a lot of being in the right place at the right time and hopefully, it will be my Daytona. (Gordon finished 18th in the 1991 Daytona 500, driving for Junie Donlavey.)
