Dale Jarrett Leads Line Up For IROC/True Value XXIII
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (2/10/99) -- Dale Jarrett is hoping his draw today for qualifying for the IROC/True Value XXIII is a sign of good things to come. Jarrett drew the pole for Friday's race and plans to hold on to the top spot to take the checkered flag in his fourth run in the IROC at Daytona International Speedway.
"I plan to get my first win on Friday," said Jarrett, who will compete against 11 other superstars in identically-prepared stock cars. "They do a great job with these cars and to race against the caliber of competition here is just tremendous. I'm really looking forward to it."
Sharing the front row is Bobby Labonte, who took Al Unser Jr.'s place after Unser was called away from the race to deal with a family illness. This will be Labonte's first run in the IROC series.
Friday's race also will mark the first time on American soil that Dale Earnhardt competes against his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. "It's good to be back in the series again," said Earnhardt. " I won the 500, and I think that's why I'm in it (IROC) again. Then my kid wins the Busch Grand National Championship and he's in it. So maybe we can gang up on it."
Like his father, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is looking forward to the IROC/True Value race. "It's just an honor to be involved in the IROC series," said Earnhardt. "Especially for myself watching my father who's been doing it for so many years." Tickets are still available for Friday's IROC/True Value XXIII as well as other Speedweeks' events. For tickets, call the Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-RACE.
