Mark Martin wins record-high five Crown Royal IROC championships while Martin Truex, Jr. wins season finale race
Hampton, Ga. (October 29, 2005) Atlanta Motor Speedway provided fans a double header on Saturday and the fans were not disappointed.
The season finale race of the Crown Royal IROC Series started the day off and points leader, Mark Martin started from the back and it didn't take long for him to move up to the front. Martin Truex, Jr. passed Martin a few laps later and dominated the event, leading 43 of the 65-lap event. Truex scored his first ever IROC win in his first season in the series.
"It was a lot of fun out there," said Truex. "I am really excited about my first IROC victory. IROC is one of the things that is just really cool to be a part of...it is something you watch growing up and all the best drivers in the world are in it."
Truex finished second in the season ending points battle to Martin, who scored his record-breaking fifth IROC title.
"IROC has been the highlight of my driving career and I am most proud of this accomplishment," Martin said of his five IROC titles. "The most special thing about the IROC series is the relationships you build along the way. I wouldn't have had a chance to probably even talk to all these other accomplished drivers if I had never been invited to race in the IROC series...that is the coolest thing in my mind."
The IROC finish order was as follows: Truex, Martin, Matt Kenseth, Helio Castroneves, Danny Lasoski, Sebastian Bourdais, Buddy Rice, Steve Kinser, Max Papis, Bobby Hamilton, Scott Pruett and Kurt Busch.
The final point standing order was: Martin, Truex, Kenseth, Rice, B ourdais, Busch, Lasoski, Hamilton, Castroneves, Papis, Kinser, and Pruett.
