England's Dan Wheldon made an impressive start to his CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship challenge yesterday when he stormed through the field in the series opener at the new Fundidora Park circuit in Monterrey, Mexico to finish 5th in front of a crowd of over 100,000.

Having qualified an unusually low 10th in Saturday's final qualifying session -- due to set-up problems and changing track conditions -- the 22-year old Briton drove a hard-charging race, passing several competitors, in his Gemstar Communications Lola entered by PacWest Racing.

Wheldon, who has been 'Rookie of the Year' for the past two seasons (US FF2000 in 1999 and CART Toyota Atlantic in 2000), looks on course for a hat-trick of awards as he is already second in this year's CART Dayton Indy Lights 'Rookie' standings.
