SIMMONS IS SECOND FASTEST AND KANE NINTH IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (September 1, 2000) -- Team KOOL Green's Jeff Simmons set the second fastest time of the day, while TKG teammate Jonny Kane had to settle for ninth fastest in today's provisional qualifying for Sunday's Indy Lights race in Vancouver. Simmons clocked a lap of 1 minute, 8.762 seconds (93.243 mph) around the 1.781-mile temporary street circuit in downtown Vancouver. Kane had his fastest lap -- good enough for third on the provisional grid -- disallowed for a pit exit violation. He had to settle for his next best lap, a 1:10.761 (90.609 mph), which placed him ninth for the day.

Simmons is just sixty-five thousandths (.065) of a second behind provisional pole sitter Scott Dixon, who set a fast lap of 1:08.697, an average speed of 93.332 mph.

Kane was particularly disappointed, having won the pole at Long Beach and Detroit this season, the only other street circuits where the series has raced. Simmons, a rookie in the series, is looking for the first pole of his Indy Lights career.

Indy Lights drivers have one more 30-minute practice tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. before final qualifying begins at 12:15 p.m. (All times are Pacific Daylight Time)

JEFF SIMMONS, #26 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (2nd with a lap-time of 1:08.762 seconds at 93.243 mph)

"It was wet in this morning's practice, so I'd never been on the track in the dry until I went out for qualifying. And I had to go out and get on it really quick because it looked like rain was on the way and I had to sit out the last eight minutes of the session to serve a penalty for causing a red flag at Mid-Ohio. So I think we're in good shape. The KOOL car's not bad, we're mainly just dealing with understeer everywhere on the track. There are a couple of places that we have a little oversteer when I'm trying to put the power down. But second in provisional qualifying isn't a bad start to the weekend. You never know what the weather is going to be like -- it could be like this all weekend, so it's important to get in a good time today."

JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (9th with a lap-time of 1:10.761 seconds at 90.609 mph)

"I had my best time disallowed because CART says that I put all four wheels over the pit exit blend line -- you're only supposed to put two wheels over. So we dropped from third to ninth, which is pretty disappointing. But hopefully the weather will be good tomorrow and we'll get another chance. I haven't raced here before, and with the wet weather this morning I really haven't got many dry laps yet. We'll just have to see what tomorrow brings us. But we're not panicking. Team KOOL Green has been the quickest on the street circuits just about all year. Tomorrow is another day, and we'll be back to go for it."
