Team KOOL Green's Jeff Simmons earned his second consecutive third place finish and teammate Jonny Kane came home fifth in today's 34-lap Indy Lights race at Laguna Seca Raceway.
Simmons had a rather uneventful race, starting and finishing third, to score the third podium of his rookie season in Indy Lights. He also finished third last week at Vancouver. Simmons has now scored points in eight of nine races this season and sits fifth in the championship standings with 78 points. Today's finish moves Simmons to second in the Rookie of the Year standings, 14 points behind Townsend Bell.
Jonny Kane started seventh in today's race and moved up two spots to claim fifth, his best finish since winning in Detroit on June 18. Kane earned 12 points and moves from 10th to ninth place in the standings with three races to go.
Championship points leader Scott Dixon won his fifth race of the season and boosted his points lead to 43 over Townsend Bell. Casey Mears started on the pole but came home second and moves from fourth to third in the standings with 91 points.
JEFF SIMMONS, #26 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(Started 3rd / Finished 3rd / 5th in championship with 78 points)
"I had a pretty good start and Scott (Dixon) kind of moved over on me and didn't give me anywhere to go going down the front straight. I just kind of had to settle in behind Casey (Mears). They pushed wide but I really didn't have enough room to get in there and I wasn't sure if there was any damage to the KOOL car after the bump (from Dixon) so I was pretty careful for the first couple of laps. I had a little too much oversteer, especially in turn four and that's where I was losing most of my time. Two podium finishes in a row is great, and we made up a lot of points in the rookie battle today. If we can keep doing that we'll have a good shot a Rookie of the Year."
JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(Started 7th / Finished 5th / 9th in championship with 45 points)
"We picked up two spots which is good, because normally in races like this it's very difficult to overtake and you quite often finish where you start. Tony Renna was holding me up quite a lot near the end of the race and I think I could have gone almost a half-second a lap quicker if I could have just got past him, which would have put us at pretty good times, really. I kept the pressure on him the whole time and he made a few little mistakes, but just not quite big enough for me to get by. It's just a shame we didn't have this car in qualifying. It's still not exactly right but a lot better than yesterday. The weekends are normally pretty short and if you make a wrong decision on setup at any time you never really catch up. But the Team KOOL Green crew made some big changes for warm-up this morning and we were able to make up some ground in the race."
