Thursday Jan 28,1999 - Rodolfo Lavin made his BSR debut during a January 23-24 test at Phoenix International Raceway. The young racer, who earned a career-best eighth place finish at the 1998 Homestead season opener, logged over 400 incident-free miles on the PIR oval. "The test went very, very well," remarked Lavin. "The car felt great and these guys work very hard. Everyone works well together, and that's what a team needs to be successful. I'm very happy to be with Brian Stewart Racing." 1996 Indy Lights champion David Empringham, who returns for a second year as BSR driver coach, praised his new charge. "I'm really impressed with how dedicated and focused Rodolfo is," said Empringham. "He definitely has the will to win. Hopefully, I can guide him to his best year in Indy Lights." Team owner Brian Stewart echoed Empringham's optimism. "The PIR test went very well," Stewart said. "We're getting to know Rodolfo and he's getting to know us. Our goal is not to win testing - it's to get his confidence up so he can be quick at Homestead. Rodolfo communicates well with both David and his engineer Lenny Tumenas. We're happy." Despite his young years, Lavin will likely be one of the few fourth-year drivers racing in the 1999 PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship. He spent the last two season with Indy Regency Racing after debuting in 1996 with Leading Edge Motorsports. Brian Stewart Racing, which captured one victory and three pole positions with 1998 drivers Luiz Garcia Jr. and Sergio Paese, is one of the most successful and experienced teams in PPG-Dayton Indy Lights competition. Since 1989, drivers competing for Brian Stewart have earned 31 Indy Lights victories, 27 pole positions, and two series championships (1990 and 1991). Graduates of the Brian Stewart Racing team include FedEx Championship Series drivers Bryan Herta, PJ Jones, Cristiano da Matta, and Paul Tracy.
