The race started clean, with both PacWest drivers maintaining their positions through turn one. A full course yellow flew on lap 15, which bunched up the field, but when the track went green a couple of laps later Dominguez and Wheldon maintained their positions. On lap 24, Wheldon fell four spots as his car apparently experienced a misfire. He never regained his position, and finished seventh. Dominguez fought hard to catch Townsend Bell, but never got close enough to contend. He finished the race in second place, his second podium of 2001.
MARIO DOMINGUEZ - # 17 DEL VALLE CORONA TELEVISA PACWEST LIGHTS
Finishing Position: 2nd Laps: 43
"The way my car handled, second place is a great finish," said Dominguez. "I started to experience a bad oversteer after about fifteen laps, so I just tried to hang on the rest of the way. It was a good finish, but Townsend pulled away so far I couldn't really put any pressure on him. I'm very happy with a podium finish, and especially happy because 50,000 pesos will go to Mexican children through a program my sponsor, del Valle, set up. I needed these points, and I'm thrilled with my result."
DAN WHELDON - # 1 GEMSTAR PACWEST LIGHTS
Finishing Position: 7th Laps: 43
"My race was working out as planned, and my car was running well for the first half of the race," said Wheldon. "At the beginning, I put pressure on Mario as long as I could but then something happened to my car and I lost some power. I'm pretty sure we had a misfire because the engine was making popping noises at high speeds. It seemed to be okay when I would get off the gas a little but something definitely went wrong. We did manage a few points, but I would have liked to finish higher."
