Plowman Leads Firestone Indy Lights Effort with Eighth-Place Start; Pippa Mann Qualifies 18th
LEXINGTON, Ohio - (August 8, 2009) -- A late-morning rain storm dampened the final minutes of IndyCar Series practice Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, but the course dried in time for afternoon qualifications for the Firestone Indy Lights.
In qualifications for the Firestone Indy Lights race, Panther driver Martin Plowman posted the eighth-best time of the session, with a lap speed of 106.939 mph, 1:16.0135 seconds, giving him his best road course qualification effort since starting sixth in Long Beach. Pippa Mann will start in the 18th position after turning a best lap of 1:17.9514 seconds, 104.280 mph.
Martin Plowman, No. 15 Firestone Indy Lights
"We're really disappointed with this qualifying run because our car is definitely faster than the times show. After setting the second fastest time in the morning practice in dry conditions, the weather turned around it rained right before quals started. We took a chance changing our setup for the rain, but it dried faster than we expected and that hurt us a little. The car was still pretty good, but not as good as the one we had in the morning. We have a strong car for the race tomorrow and I'm looking forward to battle my way when the green flag drops".
Pippa Mann, No. 16 Firestone Indy Lights
"In the wet part of the session we were running fairly well inside the Top Ten but unfortunately when it started to dry out we dropped down in the time sheet. We weren't fast in this morning's practice with the No. 16 car and I really don't know what's going on but we're trying to figure it out. The No. 15 is doing quite well but for some reason we're not fast right now."
