SERIES: As the "Official Development Series" of the CART FedEx Championship Series, the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship is internationally recognized as a driver's final stop to the top of the North American motorsports ladder. A "spec" series," Indy Lights emphasizes driver skill and team preparation through the use of identical Lola T97/20 open-wheel, single-seat race cars. Indy Lights cars are about 25 percent smaller than the Champ Cars they resemble and can reach a top speed of 190 mph.

THIS RACE: Laguna Seca is the 11th event in the 12-race 1999 PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship. An international field of approximately 20 drivers representing close to a dozen different countries are expected to take the green flag.

HISTORY: This will be the 14th overall and consecutive appearance of the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship at Laguna Seca. It will be the second Indy Lights race Laguna Seca for Servia and Peter, and third for Mears. Servia started third last year and finished second place. Peter started on the outside pole.

Series leader Oriol Servia holds an 18-point lead over Casey Mears, 124-106 ... Peter is third place in the championship with 93 points ... no other Indy Lights drivers are mathematically still in contention for the championship ... Mears remains the only Indy Lights driver who has completed every lap (601) and mile (871.110 miles) run in 1999.
