(Laguna Seca, Ca): PacWest Racing’s Scott Dixon and Tony Renna will both start in the top four in tomorrow’s Yahoo! Sports Monterey Challenge at the Laguna Seca Raceway in California – the ninth round of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship.
Dixon, driver of the #17 Invensys/Powerware PacWest Lights entry, set a time of 1:15.949 – missing pole by just 0.058 of a second to Dorricott Racing’s Casey Mears.
The young New Zealander, who has a 21-point championship lead, was passed by Mears with just three minutes remaining in the session. He did not have enough fuel left in his car to go back out and have another crack at the pole.
Renna, driver of the #18 Motorola PacWest Lights machine, made big improvements on his efforts from yesterday and set a time of 1:16.469 to put himself fourth and on the second row. It was a great recovery for Renna after he was involved in an accident in the morning session with Chris Menninga after only four laps – ending his session.
Renna is chasing his fifth top-four finish in five races tomorrow as he recovers from an early season plagued with bad luck and mechanical problems. He is currently sixth in the championship chase with 64 points.
SCOTT DIXON - # 17 INVENSYS/POWERWARE PACWEST LIGHTS – 2nd
Qualifying time: 1:15.949s
“We certainly made some progress with the car overnight and in the end there was probably still a little time left in it,” said Dixon.
“We cut it too close with fuel and did not have the opportunity to go back out.
“While there was a big difference with track conditions between sessions yesterday, the place stayed pretty consistent today.
“It would be nice to take the lead from the opening lap tomorrow, but this is a pretty difficult place to start on the outside of row one. I won’t be doing anything rash at the first corner.”
TONY RENNA - # 18 MOTOROLA PACWEST LIGHTS – 4th
Qualifying Time: 1:16.469s
“My car was much better this afternoon,” said Renna.
“We did not change anything on the car really, except for tire pressures, so I am definitely happy with my run. This is the best we have been all weekend and this gives us a lot of confidence heading into Sunday’s race.”
