Houston, TX. (Sept. 30th, 2000) Team KOOL Green driver Jonny Kane managed to clinch fourth in today's qualifying for Sunday's Dayton Indy Lights 50-lap race on the streets of Houston.
Kane had been quickest in the morning practice and had two sets of tyres to work with in qualifying. Kane took the pole early in the thirty-minute session, but after nearly ten minutes he spun and clipped the wall. This saw him lose the rear wing and damage the gearbox.
Jonny pitted for repairs and was able to return to the track with six minutes remaining. His time had fallen to fifth in the interim. Jonny was picking up speed and had moved up to fourth when Derek Higgins spun at turn five putting an early end to the session.
Casey Mears took the pole with a time of 1:04.722 seconds. Casey's teammate Townsend Bell will line up alongside him in second (1:04.905 seconds) and Derek Higgins third (1:04.985 seconds).
JONNY KANE, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN
"I made it very difficult for myself today as I only got eight laps in and I had two sets of tyres. I went a little bit wide at turn nine and I spun the car around. I touched the tyre wall with the rear wing and unfortunately I damaged the gearbox casing as well, which took a while to fix. I think if I had been able to get at least one more lap in we could have had pole. It was unfortunate that the session was cut short. I have been one of the quickest all weekend so hopefully we'll have a good race tomorrow."
