First Infiniti Pro Series car arrives in Indianapolis.
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - The first Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series Dallara arrived April 1 in Indianapolis in preparation for the car's on-track debut April 8 at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Fla.
The chassis, which was shipped from the Dallara Automobili factory in Parma, Italy on March 30, is being assembled and fitted with an Infiniti Q45 engine at the Gasoline Alley shop of Sinden Racing Service.
The all-new car design incorporates several state-of-the-art elements, including a longitudinally mounted monoshock front suspension unit, a front-loading, six-speed sequential gearbox and forged magnesium wheels.
"The new forward-mounted gearbox allows us to improve the design and function of the attenuator, and this, along with many other safety features, makes the new Infiniti Pro Series car the perfect package for oval racing," said Roger Bailey, executive director of the Infiniti Pro Series. "We're really looking forward to seeing the car on track on Monday."
Indy Racing League driver Robbie Buhl, who was scheduled to shake down the new car at the Walt Disney World Speedway test, suffered a concussion in qualifying for the Yamaha Indy 400 and has opted to turn over the testing responsibilities to 1999 Indianapolis 500 Bank One Rookie of the Year Robby McGehee.
The inaugural season of the Infiniti Pro Series will begin July 7 at Kansas Speedway and culminate with the Sept. 14 season finale at Texas Motor Speedway. Nashville Superspeedway, Michigan International Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Gateway International Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway also will play host to Infiniti Pro Series events in 2002.
The 100-mile Infiniti Pro Series "sprints" will take place at the same track and on the same day as Indy Racing League events except for the Texas race, which will take place the day before the IRL's season-ending Chevy 500.
Infiniti Q45 engines will power new Dallara Automobili chassis built for the series, with Firestone Firehawk tires used exclusively on all cars. The V8 engines will produce approximately 450 horsepower for the single-seat winged chassis, providing an ideal training ground for the 650-horsepower, single-seat winged cars of the Indy Racing League.
