Hemelgarn/Johnson gear up for inaugural Pikes Peak 100

Fountain, Colo. -- Hemelgarn/Johnson drivers Cory Witherill and Aaron Fike will compete in the inaugural Infiniti Pro Series race at Pikes Peak International Raceway Saturday June 14. Their team is the only Pro Series competitor to have tested at the 1-mile Pikes Peak oval and the talented duo hope to hold a slight advantage over the field.

"Our Pikes Peak test in May gave us a good baseline for the upcoming race," said Navajo Witherill. "The only problem was the 30-40 mph winds, so we didn't get a full day of testing, but we'll be one of the few cars that have track time. We'll have more knowledge and possibly an advantage over the other teams."

In addition to their test session, both have had previous experience at the 1-mile Pikes Peak oval, racing in various open-wheel events. And both Witherill and Fike are hungry for their first win of the 2003 season.

Witherill and Fike each scored a victory during the inaugural 2002 season and finished fourth and fifth, respectively in the points standings. The two have performed well thus far, with Witherill most recently recording an impressive runner-up finish in the inaugural Freedom 100, and should fair well at Pikes Peak.

The Pikes Peak 100 Infiniti Pro Series race starts at 2:30 p.m. (MDT) Saturday, June 14. Pole qualifying starts at 4 p.m. Friday, June 13. Infiniti Pro Series practice session begin at 12:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. June 13 and 10 a.m. June 14.

The Pikes Peak 100 will be broadcast at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) June 28 on ESPN2.
