Nunn to test Female Drivers in IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series Car
INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Sept. 27, 2004 -- Nunn Motorsports will test several female drivers in an Indy Racing League Menards Infiniti Pro Series car during a three-day test Nov. 8-10 at Texas Motor Speedway.
The team will use the test to identify a driver for a chance at a full-season ride during the 2005 season.
Kathryn Nunn, the first female team owner in the IRL, and Lyn St. James, a seven-time starter in the Indianapolis 500, will collaborate on this effort and identify the women to participate in the test.
"I am very excited at the possibility of having a deserving young driver in one of our cars next season and at being able to help develop her skills for an eventual move up to the IRL IndyCar® Series," Nunn said.
St. James is one of only three women who have competed in the Indianapolis 500. Since retiring from Indy-style competition in 2001, she has dedicated herself to assisting women drivers from around the world with their racing careers, primarily through her Lyn St. James Driver Development Program.
"There are so many talented women drivers racing around the country and around the world," St. James said. "This is a tremendous opportunity that Kathryn is providing for all of these drivers, one which may be selected to step into an Indy-style car and develop their skills with an eye on someday racing in the Indianapolis 500."
The Menards Infiniti Pro Series was formed in 2002 as the development series for the IRL IndyCar Series. Past champions A.J. Foyt IV (2002) and Mark Taylor (2003), as well as driver Ed Carpenter, have earned full-time rides in the IndyCar Series.
Nunn Motorsports joined the Menards Infiniti Pro Series in July and has earned three victories with rookie driver P.J. Chesson. The team added a second car at the Chicagoland 100 on Sept. 11.
The Menards Infiniti Pro Series California 100 will take place at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on Oct. 2 at California Speedway. The race will be broadcast at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on Oct. 7 by ESPN2. The IndyCar Series season continues with the Toyota Indy 400 at 3 p.m. (EDT) on Oct. 3 at California Speedway. The race will be broadcast live on ESPN and the IMS Radio Network.
