A day at the office:
moses Smith tests for the Infiniti Pro Series with Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
When I ran into Moses yesterday at Phoenix International Raceway, he looked tired, but was sporting a satisfied smile. The lap times of Infiniti Pro Series session had just been posted. Although busy with team obligations, Moses made the time to answer my questions:
AE: Moses, how are you feeling?
Moses: Well, happy . . . . excited.
AE: Were you disappointed that you did not break into the top times?
Moses: Disappointed? (chuckle) "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it"
Well, you don't do your best work on your first day at the office. Of course I would be lying if I said that I was not eager to post the fastest laps. But if you want to stay successful, you have to look at the goal of the day and then measure your progress from those reasonable targets.
Sam Schmidt Motorsports was wonderful today. Mechanical gremlins keep us from getting in more laps on Wednesday, which was the original plan. So I was truly a "rookie" when we went out for that last session. This was my first opportunity in a car of this quality and horsepower, so I knew I had to start the test off slow and build up to speed.
AE: Why "slow."
Moses: That's the way I like to get used to a new car, and to respect the team.
Moses: Sam gave me a wonderful opportunity. I certainly did not want to repay him and the team by damaging the equipment - - you know - - by blowing up their back-up engine or slamming the car into a wall. Just common sense.
AE: What can you tell us about testing an Infiniti Pro Series vehicle?
Moses: It is a blast. The cars are fast and very predictable. The most impressive thing about the test was working with the people. The guys that make up the Sam Schmidt Motorsports team were very professional, supportive, and great to work with. Although this was the first time I had ever worked with the team, it did not feel that way. It was easy to communicate with everyone.
AE: How did the test end?
Moses: The last hour of my test, I was getting quite comfortable in the car and familiar with the track. My spotter was recording my times, and they were faster with every lap. During that final green flag period, I increased our lap speed by about ten miles per hour. I didn't want the session to end, when the checkered flag came out, I could not believe it was already over.
AE: What are your plans for the immediate future.
Moses: Plans. Well I hope to fit in my last test of the season in with Beardsley Motorsports. This test was part of my prize package for placing second in the North American Star Mazda Pro Series last year. We are still working out the logistics, but with today's' invaluable track time and experience, I can't wait for that test. Plans? - I am still not sure what, but I can tell you that I will be racing in 2003 and my master plan includes moving up the ladder to CART or IRL.
AE: Thank you for your time Moses.
Moses: Could I just add a quick comment?
Moses: I just wanted to thank the HASA Pool Products family, my main sponsor last year, for all their continuing support. Also thanks to Sam Schmidt for giving me this opportunity to test with him and his team. This is a tough business, and it is the support of others that fuels my racing ventures.
