SAM SCHMIDT MOTORSPORTS MID-OHIO PREVIEW
Lexington, Ohio -- This weekend, Sam Schmidt Motorsports will head to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the inaugural Indy Racing League weekend, including the Indy Pro Series' Mid-Ohio 100.
Although this is the first Indy Pro Series race at the facility, all three drivers have some sort of experience on the 2.4-mile natural terrain road course.
Ryan Justice and Logan Gomez both raced at the circuit in the 2006 Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear. Justice won the event while Gomez finished eighth in the 34-car field.
Needless to say, both are confident for their chances this weekend.
Also, the two tested at the facility with teammate Alex Lloyd in their Indy Pro Series machines just before the Liberty Challenge at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Lloyd came away from the test feeling confident about how the team would do upon its return. More importantly, the natural terrain layout of the circuit was something he enjoyed quite a bit.
Practice starts on Friday with a session at 8:45 a.m. as well as at 2:20 p.m. Both sessions are a half-hour long. Qualifying takes place Saturday morning at 8:25, followed by another practice later at 11:10. A final warm-up will take place on Sunday morning at 8:10 for 15 minutes, and the race itself will begin at 10:45. The 40-lap event has a 60-minute maximum time window.
The race will end after 40 laps or 60 minutes -- whichever comes first.
All times listed are in the eastern daylight time zone. All on-track activity can be viewed live via streaming video by logging on to indycar.com all weekend.
#7 LUCAS OIL/Isilon Systems Driver Alex Lloyd
1st in points with 499; 132 points ahead of 2nd-place Hideki Mutoh
"Mid-Ohio is a nice track. It has wonderful scenery. It's a great example of what a natural terrain road course should be. When we tested there, we did pretty well. I'm really looking forward to racing there as I think we should put on a good show, and more importantly, it will be a fun race for us to drive."
#23 Isilon System/FlaCondos.net Driver Logan Gomez
10th in points with 221; 19 points behind sixth-place Mike Potekhen
"Hopefully we have an improvement since our last road course race at Watkins Glen since we didn't have really good results there. Since we tested here, we have experience already. It's also a track I've already raced at before. The team was quick here in the test. It should be a pretty good race as a lot of guys have tested here. They'll all be pretty quick."
#38 LifeLock/LUCAS OIL Driver Ryan Justice
13th in points with 176; 15 points behind 12th-place Andrew Prendeville
"We tested fairly well there, and Mid-Ohio is a place where I've won a lot of races and poles so I definitely know my way around there. I feel like I need to redeem myself after crashing out of race one in Watkins Glen. Definitely a lot of motivation, and I'll be pushing hard. Hopefully, even if the car's not perfect, I'll be able to pick up that last little bit and pick up stronger results because we had a good run going for a little bit in the last couple of races, and then I hit a bit of a slump that's absolutely unacceptable for me. I'm definitely looking to get out of it, and this is a great place for me to get back in the right direction."
Team Owner, Sam Schmidt
"Mid-Ohio is such a classic American permanent road course. It's great to be racing at the circuit. I know the guys have all tested well there, and we're hoping to use the good runs at Nashville and past successes at the track for Logan and Ryan to have three great results this weekend."
* Currently, after 11 races, Lloyd has 499 points in the season-long point standings with a 132-point lead on second-place Hideki Mutoh. For comparison, last year's Indy Pro Series champion, Jay Howard, scored a total of 390 points in 11 races. The series record of 513 points in a season was set in 2004 by Thiago Medeiros in 12 races driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
* This weekend, Logan Gomez is the youngest driver and one of only two native Hoosiers entered in the Indy Pro Series Mid-Ohio 100. Though Alex Lloyd and his wife, Sam, claim to be transplanted Hoosiers, their lack of a Hoosier accent does not yet make them eligible to be a "native" Hoosier.
