MARCO ANDRETTI TO CAMPAIGN FIVE ADDITIONAL MENARDS INFINITI PRO SERIES RACES
INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, April 21, 2005 -- Marco Andretti will compete in five additional IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series races in 2005, including two races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - the Futaba Freedom 100, run the same weekend as the Indianapolis 500; and the Liberty Challenge, contested during the United States Grand Prix weekend.
Andretti, the 18-year-old grandson of former Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti and the son of Andretti Green Racing co-owner Michael Andretti, won his series debut April 3 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg driving the No. 26 Vonage Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone.
Andretti will compete in both races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and also will compete on the 1-mile oval at Milwaukee (July 24) and the road courses at Infineon Raceway (Aug. 28) and Watkins Glen International (Sept. 25).
"Obviously, I'm pretty excited about everything," said Andretti, who will graduate from high school next month. "Getting the opportunity to run at Indy twice in a month is pretty unbelievable. I don't think any of us really expected St. Pete to go as well as it did for us, but it did, so I'm glad we're going to get a chance to get back out there this year and try to do it again."
The Futaba Freedom 100 on May 27 will be Andretti's first career race on the 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis where the Andretti family has made 53 starts, including Mario's 1969 victory.
"This is a great opportunity for Marco and exciting for the whole family," Michael Andretti said. "He was so impressive with the way that he raced in St. Petersburg with all the pressure and expectations that were on him. I just think it's good for him to get as much experience as he can right now, and running five different courses like this over the rest of the season in these cars is going to be really good for him."
Andretti won 11 races last season, claiming the Formula TR Pro Series title.
The Menards Infiniti Pro Series, formed in 2002, is the premier ladder series in the Indy Racing League, developing drivers for the IndyCar® Series, America's top open-wheel racing series.
Menards Infiniti Pro Series cars boast 420-horsepower, Infiniti V8 engines and can attain speeds of 190 mph on superspeedways.
The 2005 Menards Infiniti Pro Series season continues with the Futaba Freedom 100 on May 27. The race will be telecast on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. EDT on May 27.
