INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Menards Infiniti Pro Series rookie Nick Bussell struggled to find top speed today in his #21 Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone machine during the running of the Futaba Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bussell spent most of the race battling in the middle of the field on the famous 2 ½ mile oval.
Things got tricky on the restart after the second caution of the day. Herman Quiroga suddenly spun causing both Bussell and the #26 car driven by Marco Andretti to spin trying to avoid him. While all 3 cars were collected in the accident, Bussell did not make contact with either car or the wall.
"The car was good in turns 3 and 4, but we struggled with the wind and the draft in turn 2", says Bussell. "We tried everything to find the speed we needed but it wasn't there. When Quiroga spun on that last restart, I started to go low and then Marco was right there. I just barely tapped the brakes to avoid him, but that's all it took. Thankfully, I was able to hold it off the wall".
Team owner Jeff West shares his driver's disappointment, but remains hopeful for the rest of the season. "This is our first year in this series" he says. "For a rookie team and driver, we've had a good run thus far and have shown that we have the potential to be competitive. We just have to work some things out after this, and be ready for Texas".
The Texas 100 will be run at the Texas Motor Speedway on June 11th immediately before the IRL Bombardier Learjet 500k.
