Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s Homestead Race ends with Accident
Lap 22 Accident Stops Arie Luyendyk's Fast Weekend in Homestead Short of Victory; Arie Jr. Uninjured in Turn Four Incident in The #5 Active Intl / Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone
Finishing Position: 9th
Accident on lap 22 in turn four. Arie Jr. was checked at the infield care center, cleared and released to drive.
Qualified: 2nd (28.191 mph, 189.629 mph)
Note: Arie Jr. was the quickest driver overall in both practices on Friday for the "Homestead-Miami 100," with a time of 28.313 seconds and a speed of 188.818 mph.
"I'm really not sure what happened out there with Paul Dana. It looked like he just drove up into me and stuck me in the wall, but again, I have no idea what would cause him to do that. My Active International/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car was awesome in traffic, and I really think I had something for my teammate Thiago (Medeiros) for the end of the race. We were working really well together during the early part of the race, drafting and catching the leader pretty fast. After I crashed, though, I found out we had some blistered tires that eventually caused Thiago to fall back a bit at the end, so who knows how the end of the race would have ended for me if I had a chance to run all of the laps. We are a small budget team just trying to run a few races early this year, and this really hurt our chances to get to the next race in my hometown of Phoenix. I am fine, but it was a pretty big hit."
NOTE: It was later dicsovered that Paul Dana, running on the low side of the track next to Arie Jr. (positions 2 and 3), could not avoid running over an engine diaper laying on the racing surface, and it wrapped around tire and wing, causing him to lose front end grip and sending him into Arie Jr.
