First test laps at Pikes Peak for Fike and Witherill.

Fountain, CO -Hemelgarn/Johnson teammates Aaron Fike and Cory Witherill turned their first test laps at Pikes Peak International Raceway, each completing more than 100 laps around the 1-mile oval during the private test May 1.

Fike, 20, posted fast laps in his No. 91 RFMS/Hemelgarn Racing Infiniti-powered Dallara despite battling windy conditions.

"It was real windy the entire day but the test went well," Fike said. "We ran with full fuel loads and also qualifying setups. We figured a lot out and what we need to do when we return in June for the race."

Fike is no stranger to the Pikes Peak oval, having participated in various USAC Midget and Silver Crown events.

"I've run other types of cars at this track. No matter what type of race car I'm driving, Pikes Peak is probably my favorite track. It can be quite challenging."

Veteran Witherill, driving the No. 92 WSA Healthcare Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone entry, adjusted to the track conditions with ease and turned consistent lap times.

"The test went quite good considering it was so windy. At times I think wind gusts were around 25-30 mph so the car moved around a lot and made it difficult to get tire temperatures up to where we needed them. The wind was the biggest problem.

"Overall, it was a good test and we learned a lot about the car and the track. We made several changes to the car and made progress even though it was a little harder to determine some of the effects the changes had (on the car) because of the wind. "

The fourth event of the Infiniti Pro Series season, the inaugural Pikes Peak 100, will take place June 14.
