Menards Infiniti Pro Series to Race at 2005 U.S. Grand Prix

INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 -- The Menards Infiniti Pro Series will compete as a support race during the 2005 United States Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road circuit, one of two races for the Indy Racing League's development series next year at the world's greatest speedway.

The USGP weekend is scheduled for June 17-19, subject to FIA approval. The time, date, and distance for the Menards Infiniti Pro Series race on the 2.605-mile road circuit will be announced at a later date.

It will be the second Menards Infiniti Pro Series race at the Speedway in a span of three weeks, as the third annual Futaba Freedom 100 is scheduled for Friday, May 27 on the historic 2.5-mile oval as a support event for the 89th Indianapolis 500. The Menards Infiniti Pro Series will become the first series to race twice in one year at the Speedway since 1916.

"We're excited that the United States Grand Prix will be one of the events for the Menards Infiniti Pro Series as it expands to road courses next year," said Tony George, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Having two diverse races at the Speedway will provide a real test for the drivers and teams, and competing during two of the biggest motorsports events in the world will increase the prestige and visibility of the series with fans, media and sponsors."

The USGP event will be one of the four non-oval events on the 14-race schedule in 2005 as the Menards Infiniti Pro Series moves to road and street courses for the first time. Road circuit races also will take place at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen International, with a street race at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Formed in July 2002, the Menards Infiniti Pro Series is an essential stepping stone for drivers and teams striving to reach the pinnacle of open-wheel racing in America, the Indy Racing League IndyCar® Series. The previous two champions, A.J. Foyt IV (2002) and Mark Taylor (2003), along with Ed Carpenter, are full-time drivers in the IndyCar Series.

Infiniti Q45 engines power Dallara Automobili chassis built for the series, with Firestone Firehawk tires used exclusively on all cars. The V8 engines produce approximately 450 horsepower for the single-seat winged chassis, providing an ideal training ground for the 600-horsepower, single-seat winged cars of the IndyCar Series.
