Panther Teammates Look to Continue Team's Success in Indy Lights
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 28, 2008) -- The Panther Racing Indy Lights duo will kick start the season for the newly renamed Firestone Indy Light Series from second and thirteenth place, respectively.
British star Dillon Battistini took his No. 15 Alexp Dallara to a front row start, posting the second best time on the grid with a time of 57.3173 seconds and a speed of 186.541 on his two-lap effort. Battistini's strong qualification was surprising, because the 2007 Asian Formula 3 champion is a complete newcomer to oval racing and Indy Lights competition. He signed with Panther Racing just seven days ago and despite passing his rookie test at Homestead a week ago, today marked his first significant oval track experience.
Brent Sherman, who spent a majority of his practice time Friday running in traffic to prepare for tomorrow's race, posted a combined two-lap time of 57.8615 seconds and an average speed of 184.786.
"Having success like this in qualifications on the first day is a real compliment to me and my team at Panther. I've seen (oval racing) on TV, but tomorrow's race will be my first real experience at this. I ran in traffic some today and that was good experience for tomorrow. This was a good day and I'm quite happy with my second day in the car, and my second day on an oval."
"Obviously I'm disappointed because we were expecting more speed out of our car. I still feel like we're a couple tenths off where we need to be for tomorrow. Our times were OK in practice, but I spent a lot of time running in the draft. I'm a competitive guy, and I'm sure we're all going to pick it up in the race tomorrow."
