Dorricott Racing Returns To Long Beach "On Schedule" In Its Indy Lights Championship Pursuit
LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 4, 2001) - If early momentum is a preview to the future, Dorricott Racing may be charting another championship course when its talented three-driver team races in this weekend's 13th running of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and round two of the 12-race Dayton Indy Lights Championship. The 38 lap/74.86 mile Indy Lights Texaco Havoline Challenge around the picturesque 1.97-mile, 11-turn seaside street circuit is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. (PT), Sunday, April 8. It is the featured support race to the CART FedEx Championship Series Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach later that day. Second year Dorricott Racing driver Townsend Bell, of Costa Mesa, Calif., returns to Long Beach after finishing second place in this season's opening round at Monterrey, Mexico. Bell's first experience at Long Beach was last year when he qualified 10th in his Indy Lights debut. He was off to a strong start before ill fortune swallowed him on lap seven. French driver Soheil Ayari, who was running 11th, misread his entry into a mid-course turn and struck the left rear side of Bell's DirecPC Lola to literally "punt" Bell out of the race. Bell avoided wall contact but the car stalled. He was unable to re-start and was saddled with a 17th place finish. Ayari continued to pit lane with minimal damage but retired from the race nonetheless. Jon Fogarty, of Portola Valley, Calif., caught the attention of many during his Indy Lights debut at Monterrey. Fogarty, the 2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series runner-up, piloted his Fogarty Winery & Vineyards Lola to a third place finish. Fogarty earned 11 top-10 finishes in 12 Barber Dodge Pro Series races last year. The 25-year-old northern California native posted seven top-three finishes including wins at Lime Rock Park, Belle Isle, and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He also won poles at Lime Rock and Belle Isle in scoring a season total of 155 points. Fogarty is seeking as good a start to his Indy Lights career as his 2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series season opened when he scored podium finishes in six of the first seven races. Damien Faulkner, of Ireland, also made his Indy Lights debut at Monterrey and scored a deceivingly impressive seventh place finish. Although he started sixth, Faulkner dropped three positions early before storming back through the field. Faulkner became the Republic of Ireland's first European motor racing champion in 19 years by capturing the 2000 European Formula Palmer Audi Championship. The 25-year-old Dublin resident dominated the EFPA's 20-race season behind six wins, seven poles, and 12 podium finishes. Faulkner has a remarkable finishing record that has seen him fail to finish only once in 53 races over the last three years of race competitions. Faulkner was also named Ireland's 2000 International Motorsports Competitor of the Year. This prestigious award is the same that had previously been won by Formula One star Eddie Irvine on two occasions. Bell earned 16 championship points for second place at Monterrey and trails series leader Derek Higgins, of Ireland, 22-16 after round one of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship. Fogarty is in third place with 14 points and has taken an early lead for Indy Lights Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Faulkner's six points holds down seventh place in the championship. ESPN2 will provide a same-day delayed telecast of round two of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship from Long Beach, Sunday, April 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET (3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. PT).
