HOUSTON, Texas (Sept. 29, 2000) - - First time out of the gate on a new Indy Lights circuit and Dorricott Racing's Jason Bright and Casey Mears, of Costa Mesa, Calif., looked comfortable and fast through the streets of downtown Houston in Friday morning practice. The session promptly began at 9:30 a.m. (CT) under sunny skies and no threat of rain. Dayton Tire engineers reported a track temperature of 75 degrees at the start of the session with an ambient temperature of 74 degrees. When the 40-minute session concluded, Ireland's Jonny Kane held the fastest time around Houston's 10-turn, 1.527-mile street course at 1:06.800 = 82.293 mph. Bright was only 0.023-seconds off the pace with the third fastest lap of 1:06.823 = 82.265 mph. Mears was close behind in fourth at 1:07.018 = 82.026 mph. "We had a great test day in Topeka last week and it appears to be paying off for Houston," said Bright. "I'm fractions off the fastest cars so I know we have a car that can compete. We have fine tuning ahead of us and I know this is a vital weekend for my teammates and some other competitors. I still have hopes to make a solid run for the checkered flag." Teammate Townsend Bell, of Costa Mesa, Calif., had a tougher practice due to brake problems that caused the DirecPC Lola to finish 14th at 1:07.849 = 81.021 mph. Bell's session was further complicated when he had to pit the car for the final eight minutes of practice to serve a remaining penalty from Laguna Seca. "We had an eight minute penalty to serve on a carry-over from Laguna Seca," said Bell. "That's why I stopped before the session ended. We had a lot of brake problems in addition to learning the track. The circuit isn't difficult to learn but I couldn't slow down. The front brakes were prematurely locking. We've had this problem before so I suspect we'll have better times in provisional qualifying." k
