Dan Wheldon is in provisional pole position for the sixth round of the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship which is being held this weekend at the all-new Kansas Speedway in the USA.

Rookie Wheldon led the way in both of yesterday's opening practice sessions in his GemstarCommunications / PacWest Racing Lola-Buick.

The 23-year old English driver set the day's fastest lap of 182.351 mph (30.008 seconds) in Friday's morning session and then posted the day's second quickest lap of 181.897 mph (30.083 seconds) in the afternoon run. His quickest lap was .202 of a second quicker than the second fastest driver, Rudy Junco.

As drivers and teams endured temperatures near 100 degrees and a track surface as hot as 143 degrees,Wheldon and the other competitors experimented with drafting and solo runs on the banked Kansas track.

"Everything is going good so far, as I've managed to stay the fastest throughout both of today's practice sessions," said Dan Wheldon. "We're running flat-out around this track and today we really worked on finding some decent speeds running alone as well as in a tow. Since I've struggled a bit during my last two oval races, it wasimportant for me to practice some simulated qualifying runs alone this afternoon. I ended up quicker on my own in the second session, which is what we needed toimprove on. My first session was not great but we were still quickest, which is good. It's nice to be on that end of the spectrum and I intend to stay that way for the rest of the year.'
