Due to rain, the start of the race was dellayed. When the 1973 Indianapolis 500 finally started, an 11 pile-up on the first lap, in the middle of the field saw salt walther's flip onto the catchfence. His car smashed to bits and spewed fuel into the crowd before burning violently. He suffered burned and spectators were injured but nobody was killed. This just added to the Terrible atmosphere of this race, but there was worse to come.
