FIRESTONE FAST SIX QUALIFYING REPORT
IZOD IndyCar Series - Camping World Grand Prix
Watkins Glen International - Watkins Glen, NY
Saturday, July 3, 2010 - Round 9 of 17
"Firestone Fast Six" Qualifying Results (mph): 1. Will Power (135.832); 2. Helio Castroneves (135.612); 3. Ryan Briscoe (134.898); 4. Dario Franchitti (134.860); 5. Takuma Sato (134.589); 6. Justin Wilson (134.402).
Firestone qualifying highlight: Firestone Racing brought its most durable compound/construction road course primary tire spec and paired it with it a higher-grip ("softer") alternate spec this weekend. This is Team Penske's sixth consecutive pole position at Watkins Glen and eighth overall. A chart detailing each driver's tire selection throughout qualifying is below, as well as the list of Firestone tire specs on which each driver will start the race.
Qualifying temperatures: Track temperatures ranged from 122°-128 F (50°-53° C) and ambient temperatures from 80°-84° F (26°-28° C).
From pole winner Will Power, #12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "It's awesome to have the Verizon car on the pole again. Man, the red Firestone alternate tires were so stuck! I mean, they had heaps of grip. It was just incredible. Now for race day, we have to make a decision on what tires we're going to start on. I think that's a difficult decision, just watching what happened to Ryan (Briscoe) last year, when he had a few people with reds on and he had blacks. So that's the first thing."
From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "What can you say about Team Penske - six Watkins Glen poles and eight consecutive pole positions this season. So congratulations to Will and the team for a job well-done. We'll have to wait and see how things play out on track tomorrow, however, as a good tire strategy tends to be one of the keys to winning this event. Our Firestone Racing engineers opted to bring the same exact primary and alternate tire specifications to Watkins Glen this year that produced such an exciting race in 2009. Tomorrow's temperatures look to be the hottest we've experienced at this track in some time, so that may be a factor as well. But our tires like the heat, and we're ready to go racing on the Fourth of July."
