Toronto rookie recap

After a wild weekend of IndyCar action in Toronto, I breakdown the somewhat dismal weekends most of this year's rookie class had.i

Our last double header in the Verizon IndyCar Series for 2014 is complete, so let’s take a look at how our Rookie of the Year contenders faired in Toronto.

Mikhail Aleshin

Race One start: 19th  Race One finish: 11th

Race Two start: 14th  Race Two finish:  23rd

Aleshin’s main highlight of the weekend was sliding underneath Juan Pablo Montoya into turn three in the second race and having a close encounter of the tire kind.  The good news about Aleshin’s weekend was that he placed highest among the rookies in the first race, so he’ll get a 3/5 for the Race One, but 2/5 for the second event of the weekend.

Jack Hawksworth

Race One start: 15th  Race One finish: 13th

Race Two start: 18th  Race Two finish: 6th

Hawksworth may have had a spin, but he still managed to claim the only top ten finish of the weekend for any rookie.  He barely hold off defending series champion Scott Dixon for sixth in the second race after starting ninth on the final restart.  He’ll get 3/5 for first race and 4/5 for the second due to placing higher than any other rookie the entire weekend.

Carlos Huertas

Race One start: 17th  Race One finish: 14th

Race Two start: 20th  Race Two finish: 15th

One thing’s for sure, Huertas is consistent with his finishes.  He was able to improve from his starting position in both races and was also able to stay on the lead lap in both races.  He was mostly an also-ran this weekend, so he’ll get 3/5 for both events.

Carlos Munoz

Race One start: 14th  Race One finish: 17th

Race Two start: 6th  Race Two finish: 17th

Speaking of consistency, Munoz was able to finish in the same position in both races.  He was the only rookie who didn’t improve his starting position in either race, and in fact was scored as the final car on the lead lap in Race One. He was four laps down in the second race.  I’m going to give Munoz 2/5 for both races for those reasons. I don’t know whether he didn’t have the car or if he simply wasn’t in it this weekend.

Aleshin: 5/10 for the weekend

Hawksworth: 7/10 for the weekend

Huertas: 6/10 for the weekend

Munoz: 4/10 for the weekend

Aleshin: 41/70

Hawksworth: 43/70

Huertas: 39/70

Munoz: 40/70
