Simona De Silvestro Survives Fiery Crash at Texas Debut
Scary Crash Ends Promising Race
FT WORTH, TX (June 5, 2010) - Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing's driver Simona De Silvestro arrived at the Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) with temperatures still in the high 90 degree mark. She was looking forward to her 3rd oval race of the season after a successful debut at the Indy 500 a week earlier. After qualifying last night, and a post qualifying practice session, all indications were that the Firestone 550K night race, held under the lights, would end with a high result for the young rookie driver, however a mid-race fiery crash would deny her that result, but it would leave her with a reminder of how dangerous racing is and the importance of needing a quick acting emergency response safety team.
As the Sun began to set at the Texas track, Simona took the green flag and quickly started becoming accustomed to the fast paced racing on the 1.5 mile track. By lap # 19 she had made solid improvements and gained 5 positions. Now, racing in the 21st position Simona set her sights forward and continued her march towards the front. By lap #40 she was solidly in the 19th position and after the first round of pit stops she gained even more positions. She eventually reached 16th and hovered between that and the 18th spot. On lap # 99 the No 78 Stargate Resistance machine got loose on her which resulted in hard contact with the wall. The crash and ensuing fire alarmed many and after several attempts to free her from her burning car she was finally freed as the fire fully engulfed her car. After being taken to the track Medical Center , Simona was released. Miraculously, other than burns to her right hand, Simona was released in good condition.
Simona's official finishing position for the race was 24th. Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing will head back to its Indianapolis headquarters and prepare for Round # 8, the Iowa Corn Indy 250 which will be held on June 20th at the Iowa Speedway.
Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78 - "The car was a little loose for a couple of laps. I was able to catch it a couple of times but this time it got away from me and I hit the wall. The car caught on fire and it wasn't really extinguishing. I feel bad for the guys because the car was pretty good. Now I know what a loose car is like."
Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal - "That was a scary moment and we are glad she is alright. The safety crew should be ashamed of themselves."
Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Principal - "I am completely speechless on what transpired after our car hit the wall. I am just glad Simona is ok despite that circus we saw. The team had done an amazing job and we seemed to have a good race going. It's just very unfortunate how things ended and we hope to recover from this setback. I would like to thank all our sponsors, families, and friends for their prayers through our few anxious moments this evening."
