Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: 1,088 dry-condition slicks; each car receives nine sets (36 tires) for the race weekend.
The Firehawk tire specification is new to Texas Motor Speedway, but is already race-proven in 2008 with previous appearances at Homestead-Miami and Kansas. Compared to last year's Texas tire spec, this version features sidewall construction changes at all four tire positions and new compounds for the left-side tires to provide slightly more grip.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "With barely time to catch our breath, the IndyCar Series heads to beautiful Texas Motor Speedway for the third race in as many weeks. The Bombardier Learjet 550 is assuredly one of the marquee events on the schedule. Fans everywhere look forward to this race, which is known for its dramatic tire-to-tire racing from start to finish. One of the primary reasons these drivers can race each other so close, so fast and for so long on this track is because of their unwavering confidence in the performance of their Firestone tires. They'll have a familiar product under them this weekend, since this Firehawk specification has already run successfully this year at Homestead and Kansas. Firestone is also proud to continue its relationship with Texas Motor Speedway this year, as official sponsor of the 'Firestone Qualifying Nights' on both Thursday and Friday. We're anticipating another great shootout on the track this weekend."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. It could be relying on the Firehawks' great grip to execute a daring pass, or having the confidence in the tires' durability to run an extra stint on a set to improve position. After each race, Firestone Racing submits the top three "Tire-ific" candidates to www.indycar.com, where fans cast their votes during the ensuing week to determine the winner. The "Tire-ific" recipient from the June 1 race at Milwaukee (nominees are Oriol Servia, Townsend Bell and Ryan Briscoe) will be named in pre-race ceremonies Saturday.
