After a wet Sunday that forced the postponement of yesterday's scheduled Honda Grand Prix at St. Petersburg, Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing driver Simona De Silvestro arrived at the track on Monday morning looking forward to sunny skies, dry conditions and a strong finish for her second race in the IZOD IndyCar series.
Starting the race in the 14th slot, De Silvestro took the green flag start and successfully made it through turn #1 and immediately worked herself into the 13th spot. She maintained her blistering pace and by lap #13 she moved into 11th. After a full course caution on lap #25 De Silvestro came into the pits and reentered the track in the 20th spot. As the laps continued and the pit stops began to recycle positions, a top -10 finish was looking very promising for her as she was now solidly in the 10th position. Graham Rahal attempted to fight for the position however, on lap # 73 in turn #1, he made contact with the rear of De Silvestro's Stargate Resistance car, causing it to spin. The time needed to restart the car, combined with the time needed to repair the broken front wing handicapped De Silvestro's ability to stay on the lead lap and otherwise have a top-10 finish. Despite the incident, De Silvestro stayed focused and rejoined the race after repairs were made and completed the race. She went on to record a 16th place finish.
The Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing crew heads back to its Indianapolis headquarters and will now turn its attention to Round # 3 of the IZOD IndyCar Series race at Barber Motorpsorts Park coming up in two weeks.
Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal - "Another roller coaster day at St. Petersburg. We had the right strategy again and Simona was once again driving an impressive race, destined for a high finish until contact from behind changed our fortunes. It will all come together soon."
Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78 - "I'm pretty happy with the race. We were fast and on the same pace as the lead cars. The Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing crew did a great job giving me the fast car that I had. I got unlucky though when Graham Rahal and I got together, so I'm disappointed in that respect. We will recover from that and be better in the next race. I do know that we took a big step forward this weekend and I am really looking forward to the next race."
Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Principal -"This was another mixed bag for us. The team built a very strong car and Simona drove it extremely well. We were running strong all race long until we were nudged. A very disappointing end, but once again, a very promising future. We will get stronger as a group and I am sure the results will come."
