After leading her very first race, experiencing her first rain race, and just about everything else a race could throw at you, 21 year old Simona De Silvestro has had time to reflect and rest after her debut on the streets of Sao Paulo. De Silvestro and her Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing crew have now shifted their attention to this weekend's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg where De Silvestro and the #78 Stargate Resistance entry are looking to put on another strong performance and slowly inch their way towards leading the Rookie of the Year standings.
De Silvestro became the first woman racer in IZOD IndyCar Series history to ever lead in her debut race. The lead was due to some great pit strategy called by her engineer Michael Cannon and it was her talent that allowed De Silvestro to maintain that lead for a couple of laps. She would end up finishing in the 16th spot after a mechanical issue sidelined her for 3 laps. The hope is high that the Brazilian experience and the confidence gained in her debut race will propel her to another level at this weekend's event.
Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal - "After a very encouraging performance in Brazil and returning to a track we know as a team, we are aiming for a fast qualifying and strong finish. It's an ambitious goal, but after seeing Simona and the team work together it has to be our minimum."
Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78 - "I'm pretty excited. It feels like it's been a long time since I was last in the car, even though it's only been a week and a half. I'm really looking forward to racing again and at a new track. We had a good time in Brazil and, while I think other drivers may have the advantage of already having raced here, I think we'll be okay as I get up to speed. My team has been here before and I am confident that they will give me everything I need to be successful."
Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Team Principal - "We are looking forward to St. Petersburg. The season has gotten off to a good start after having an eventful weekend down in Brazil. We hope to carry some positive momentum into the next round."
