Justin qualifies 4th in St. Petersburg
Justin and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing qualified 4th for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg after Justin hustled the No. 22 Z-Line Designs machine into the Firestone Fast Six for the second race in a row. Will Power took pole position for Team Penske (1:01.6026, 105.190 mph) with Tony Kanaan (Andretti Autosport) joining him on the front row. Justin will line up on row 2 alongside Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing). His DRR team-mate Mike Conway will start from 10th in the No. 24 Dad's Root Beer car.
In the first qualifying round Justin found himself in an ultra-competitive group of 12 cars and took the precaution of running on the softer, grippier, red-sidewalled Firestones. Competition for the 6 qualifying spots was intense and, while Justin was 3rd quickest, Dario Franchitti (Chip Ganassi Racing) and Ryan Briscoe (Team Penske) failed to make it through. In the second round Justin again ran on reds and was 4th fastest of the 12 cars involved to bag himself a spot in the Firestone Fast Six. In the final qualifying round Justin ran 6 laps on the harder, black Firestones and set a quick time of 1:02.1992 (104.181 mph), but with an increasingly soft brake pedal he opted to pit early rather than risk an off-course excursion.
"I'm pretty happy to be starting 4th in the race and it's great to have made it to the Firestone Fast Six for the second time in as many races," said Justin. "The Z-Line Designs car was fast, but we used up our two sets of red Firestones to get into the final session. In the Fast Six my brakes were going away every lap and I decided not to push it and get myself in trouble, so I parked the car in the final minutes. I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow."
