HVM RACING QUALIFIES 15th FOR HONDA GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETE
St. Petersburg, FL (April 5, 2008) - HVM Racing and EJ Viso had their one and only qualifying attempt today at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, and although EJ and the team had a good run at it, they fell just short of advancing to the next round of the top 12, being forced to settle for 15th position on the grid for tomorrow's race.
The final practice this morning went well and EJ ended up 8th overall. Everyone went into qualifying with high hopes of finishing within the top 12, but it was not in the cards. EJ locked up the brakes entering a corner and ended up in the tire barrier, bringing out a caution. The car suffered no damage, but EJ lost precious track time and his two fastest laps to that point. His second stint was interrupted by a full-course yellow which didn't allow him to finish his lap when tires were up to temperature.
EJ was in the second of two groups, each with 13 drivers, and it was the faster of the two. That is just one more factor in the equation of the new qualifying format that didn't go in EJ's favor. He will have to fight his way through the field in the race tomorrow, but the young Venezuelan is up for the challenge.
"We had a good car for qualifying today, we improved a lot from yesterday, and this morning's practice was spent fine-tuning the set-up. In qualifying, I just lost it under braking right behind Justin Wilson. That cost us valuable time, as well as our two fastest laps. The following run we put on new tires, and I had a good lap going, but then there was another caution and I didn't get to finish my hot lap. I'm disappointed not to be in the fastest 12, but I think we have a good car, and I think we can have a good race. I'm looking forward to tomorrow with the intention to bring home a good result."
Keith Wiggins, Team Owner:
"Based on this morning's practice session, we knew we were pretty quick. Looking at the splits in qualifying, we were very competitive. But, between the caution and losing our two quickest laps, that ended our chances at getting a decent time."
