FIRESTONE FIREHAWK QUALIFYING REPORT

"Firestone Fast Six" Qualifying Results (mph): 1. Tony Kanaan, 103.627; 2. Will Power, 103.499; 3. Justin Wilson, 103.444; 4. Helio Castroneves, 103.438; 5. Ryan Briscoe, 103.338; 6. Ryan Hunter-Reay, 102.845.

Firestone qualifying highlight: Tony Kanaan used the new IndyCar Series qualifying format to perfection, working his way carefully through the first two "knockout" rounds by placing second in his group, before capturing top honors in the Firestone Fast Six climactic segment for his ninth career series pole. Will Power (KV Racing Technology) recorded the fastest overall lap in qualifying, 104.280 mph, in the second round.

Qualifying temperatures: Ranged from 103°-114° F (39°-46° C) track and from 81°-83° F (27°-28° C) ambient.

From pole winner Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "The new qualifying system worked out well for me, so I have to say that I like it. It's so competitive now that I had to give everything today. When I finished the qualifying run, I was exhausted. With more good drivers, it makes it a lot more difficult. They are very good drivers, so I didn't expect anything less than what I saw. The Firestone tires worked great today. Firestone has been proving everywhere how good they are. They didn't let me down again."

From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "It was a great debut for the new qualifying format today, which proved really exciting. The competition between the transitioning Champ Car drivers and returning IndyCar Series drivers was extremely close, which ultimately adds great interest for the fans. It was good to see five of the former Champ Car drivers make it into the second round. Will Power and Justin Wilson each were fastest in at least one segment, and both were true pole contenders today. We like to believe that their extensive experience on the Bridgestone Firestone family of street-course race tires was instrumental in helping them get to the front today. The Firestone Firehawks are running really well here and we can't wait for the race on Sunday. It should be fantastic."
