CONQUEST RACING'S MARIO ROMANCINI TO START 18TH IN ST. PETERSBURG
St. Petersburg, Fla. (April 5, 2008) - After a day of learning on Friday and some overnight changes to the car, Mario Romancini hopped into the #34 Ronn Motor H2Go Conquest IZOD IndyCar Series car for Sarturday's qualifying session where he posted a time of 1 minute 2.7366 seconds, giving him a starting position of 18th place for Sunday's race.
Romancini, was part of the second group to qualify Saturday afternoon. He was running well, keeping the car within the top six of his group, and looking as if he would make it into the next session when, unfortunately, he had to come in for a tire change. Romancini went back out with only three minutes left in the ten-minute session. He was warming the tires and improving his speed when the checkered flag came out ending the session and qualifying for the team. Romancini was disappointed with the time, knowing that the car was on pace and good enough to advance into the fast 12.
"We definitely made a big improvement from Friday," commented Romancini. "We were much closer to the fastest car and being as quick as we would like. We may not have the best starting position, but we do have the pace. I am very happy with the car set-up and am confident that we will run well tomorrow."
Romancini's qualifying time was only 1.134 seconds off of pole-sitter Will Power's track record breaking time of 1 minute 1.602 seconds. Knowing that he has a good car that can go quick, Romancini feels strongly that he will have a good performance during the race today.
"Today's race is a long one," said Romancini. "My goals for today will be to stay out of trouble, especially on the first lap, push the car to gain as many positions as possible, and finish the race in the top ten."
