Speeds at Indy drop after IndyCar makes changes to cars

Will Power led the way in the pre-qualifying practice at 227.377mph.

INDIANAPOLIS - All 34 cars made a lap in the pre-qualifying practice sessions. At the top of the charts sat Team Penske's Will Power, who lapped at 227.377mph. Surprisingly, three Hondas made up the top six with Jack Hawksworth the only other driver to breach the 227mph mark.

In comparison, Scott Dixon went over 233mph in this morning's practice session where Ed Carpenter flipped after posting a 231mph lap. In case you missed it, IndyCar reacted following the third airborne crash of the week and mandated that each team must race what they start qualifying with – the aerodynamic configuration and boost levels must be identical between qualifying and race.

Ed Carpenter ran seven laps in his backup car after flipping this morning, running as fast as 223.631mph.

Each team got a total of 30 minutes to shake down their machines before the revised qualifying. There were no incidents, but Sage Karam did get uncomfortably close to the wall on the exit of a corner at one point.

Carpenter, Stefano Coletti, and Buddy Lazier were the slowest three. Lazier was at the bottom of the charts, a full 5mph off of the closest driver to him, posting a best lap of 218.398mph.
