Justin qualifies 7th for Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma
Justin and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing missed out on a place in the Firestone Fast Six at Infineon Raceway by less than a hundredth of a second on Saturday. The No. 22 Z-Line Designs car will line up 7th on the grid for Sunday's Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma (1:16.9447, 107.750 mph). Will Power took pole position for Team Penske (1:16.5282, 108.337 mph) and team-mate Helio Castroneves joins him on the front row. Justin's DRR team-mate for the weekend, JR Hildebrand, will start from 19th in the No. 24 TranSystems car (1:17.7659).
In Round 1 of qualifying, Justin was third quickest on the softer, red-sidewalled Firestones (1:17.2911), but it was clear from the lap times in both groups that Round 2, the Fast 12, would be highly competitive. For a time it looked as if the No. 22 car might make it through to the Fast Six, but Justin found himself on the bubble on the final lap and Power's quick time was enough to nudge him down to 7th.
"I'm pretty happy with the balance of the Z-Line Designs car," said Justin. "It's disappointing not to have made the Firestone Fast Six. Our qualifying lap was good, but I thought maybe I could push a bit harder. On my last lap I tried to brake a bit later into Turn 11 and unfortunately locked the rears. It's something we've been challenged with all weekend and it's been our weakest corner. We've been losing about a tenth and a half there which would have put us right in the mix for the Fast Six. We keep working on it and we've been raising the bar in terms of what the car can do, but we still need a fraction more. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's race."
