Since 1983, one-third of the drivers taking the green flag for the Indianapolis 500 have been Skip Barber trained. This year is no different with more than one-third of the field comprised of Skip Barber trained drivers including two Skip Barber drivers on the front row.

Defending Indy Racing Northern Lights Series champion Greg Ray continues to be the dominant qualifier for the series as he snatched the pole at 223.471 mph. Ray took his Skip Barber Three Day Racing School at Sebring International Raceway in 1991.

Just a hair's breadth behind is former Barber Pro Series race winner and defending CART FedEx Series Champion Juan Montoya. Montoya's four lap average around the 2.5-mile oval was 223.372 just 0.099 mph or the equivalent of less than six inches off of Ray's pole winning average.

The second row grid is finds two more Skip Barber trained drivers with Scott Sharp in the middle alongside Jeff Ward on the outside.

Stan Wattles, a Skip Barber Race veteran, will occupy the middle of row three while 1989 Barber Pro Series champ Robbie Buhl will line up on the outside of the same row.

1999 IRNLS Rookie of the Year Robby McGehee sits on the outside of row four in the 12th starting position and behind him on the middle of row five will be Three Day grad Sam Hornish Jr.

Jason Leffler another Three Day grad will take the start from the 17th starting position while Buzz Caulkins will see the green from the 22nd starting position.

Rounding out the show for the Skip Barber contingent are Johnny Unser (30th), Lyn St. James (32nd) and Andy Hillenburg.

The 500 is set to let the green flag fly at 12:00 pm EDT on Sunday, May 28.
