FIRESTONE FIREHAWK RACE REPORT
IZOD IndyCar Series - Sao Paulo Indy 300
Streets of Sao Paulo/Sambodrome - Sao Paulo, Brazil
Sunday, March 14, 2010 - Round 1 of 17
Top-5 Finishers: 1. Will Power; 2. Ryan Hunter-Reay; 3. Vitor Meira; 4. Raphael Matos; 5. Dan Wheldon.
Race Temperatures: Temperatures ranged from 121°-90° F (49°-32° C) track and from 90°- 75°F (32°- 24°C) ambient.
Firestone Tire Performance Recap: In a wild race that saw all imaginable conditions - warm and sunny, cool and cloudy, even a mid-race downpour - the Firehawk tires were up to the task on the bumpy street circuit. The black-sidewall primary tires and the red-sidewall alternates both held well through the stints. The primary spec was so good, in fact, that Will Power set the fastest race lap on the white-flag circuit, on a set of primes with 24 race laps on them. Even the Firestone rain tires saw duty during and after the rainstorm. (Drivers' race tire use chart is attached.)
From race winner Will Power, #12 Team Penske Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "It was a fantastic day. Coming back after breaking my back and to win, I was crying on the slow-down lap. We had a quick car and when they said I could run full rich, I just went for it. It was good, very good. The Firestones were great. I ran all (primaries) and you saw at the end there, I had no problem with them. They were great."
From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "What a way to start the 2010 season! This was a crazy race from start to finish, with the changing weather, passes and crashes. Through it all, the Firestone tires did their job in all conditions. For Will Power to clock the fastest lap on a set of primary Firehawks with 24 race laps on them - and they even had additional laps from a previous use this weekend - speaks volumes on how the tires performed on this abrasive and bumpy circuit, not to mention Will's confidence in them. It is sensational to see Will and Vitor Meira back on the podium in their first race back since both suffered serious injuries last season. And Ryan Hunter-Reay certainly showed he will need to be reckoned with this year. It's been an excellent inaugural event in Sao Paulo, with lots of great exposure for the city and the Firestone brand thanks to our teammates at Bridgestone Brazil. We cannot wait to return in 2011."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IZOD IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. This week's nominees are: Will Power, for his dramatic pass for the lead and win on the 56th lap; Ryan Hunter-Reay, for being the first to switch back to slicks and leading 29 laps in his Andretti Autosport debut; and Vitor Meira, for an inspired drive to third place in his return from a broken back at last year's Indy 500. Fans can vote this week at www.indycar.com to determine the recipient. The award winner will be named in pre-race ceremonies March 28 at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
